Calling all paddlers!

On April 16th, the 5th Kitchener-Waterloo (KW) Canoe Symposium invites you to come meet fellow canoeing enthusiasts and share your love of outdoors and paddling.

Those who like to venture into Canada’s wilderness know that there is no better way to explore it than in a canoe. As Bill Mason, legendary Canadian canoeist and filmmaker, once famously said: “First God made the canoe, then he created a country to go with it”. In Canada, canoeing is more than just a recreational activity – it occupies a unique place in our history. And so the KW Canoe Symposium was created five years ago to celebrate this important Canadian symbol and everything it stands for.

This year’s event will feature lots of exciting speakers, as well as displays by Handcrafted Canoes, See Sawyer Run, Canadian Canoe Museum and others. Come learn about the Canadian Canoe Museum, Algonquin’s wolf conservation program, the benefits of all-women expeditions and solo canoeing, and, of course, excellent canoeing spots both close to home and deep in the backcountry.

Event speakers and topics include:

For the Love of the Canoe: Evan Holt, Creative Projects Manager at the Canadian Canoe Museum
Women on Water: Kate Ming-Sun, guide with Wild Women Expeditions
Canoe-to-do List: Gary Johnston, adopter of “50 km Diet” of paddling and “small creek paddles” leader for the Waterloo Wellington Canoe and Kayak Club
Schrodinger’s Paddler: Alone and in a Crowd: Ian Hanna, solo paddling enthusiast
The Wolves of Algonquin Park: David LeGros, Natural Heritage Education Specialist for Algonquin Park
Off the Beaten Path: Brad Jennings and Leah Schmidt, explorers of regions seldom paddled
